Title:
CD Review: Who Are These Guys?!?
Pilotdrift
They are Las Vegas launched into space on a 70's sitcom. They are Edward
Gorey, the musical (with a little of the kitsch of that Buffy The Vampire
musical episode which we kinda thought rocked in its own special way). They
are unorthodox histrionic pop eccentrics whose musical shifts, feel, and key
changes are an abusive form of Mozart, Queen and Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo.
This is Pilotdrift.
Tonight they open up for Supergrass at the Avalon (sister site DCist caught
the show last week). If you are one of the lucky ticket holders to this sold
out concert, Pilotdrift is on at 9:00 p.m. sharp (we'll hold them to that).
LAist got a chance to speak to Pilotdrift about our city and they really
like us! "L.A. is one of my favorite places to play. The people are very up
to date with what is going on, and leave us with a feeling of
encouragement," explains lead singer Kelly Carr.
He may like our audiences, but the food thing hasn't worked out yet.
"However, I have learned lessons about food on Santa Monica Blvd.. That
playing card they put out in front of you at that Burger Shack [Hamburger
Haven] near The Troubadour is your order number. Apparently "everybody"
knows this. Those that don't know, deal with the Soup Nazi, lose their
money, and leave hungry. Also don't play that Pacman game, it steals your
money. Oh yea and that Japanese place, don't order the last of the sushi
right before they close, you feel it later." Curse you to hell Santa Monica
Blvd.!!!!
Polyphonic Spree's Tim DeLaughter took Pilotdrift under his wing after they
played a show at DeLaughter's Dallas store - Good Records (also the name of
their label). If you listen to their music, you'll hear the fit. It's not
that they sound alike (by no means), it's the vision in their compositions.
Check them out on iTunes (opens your iTunes to Pilotdrift), Myspace,
PureVolume or wherever you preview music, it's worth your time - trust us.
